I'm hearing a soft noise every 1-3 min. from the left side of my new MacBook. It sounds similar to the click you hear as the power goes off upon shutting down. Seems kind of random and even happens when sitting idle with no programs open. Just wanted to see if this is something to worry about or something to be expected with the MacBook. I often can't hear the noise it if I have music on or a window open, but it's slightly annoying if I'm in a quiet room.

Hard drive spinning down when not in use, probably.

Thanks. So the hard drive spins down that often?

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep > Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible

Simon, I unchecked that option the first day I got it and it had no effect on this noise. Is there any other way to keep the drive from spinning down?

I believe CHUD Tools (part of Apple's DevTools package, among other things) includes a SpinDownHD app for exactly this purpose. On the other hand, disabling spindown will reduce the hard drive's lifespan in the long-term.

Thanks for tip, however I probably won't go that route if it reduces the lifespan.

It's not a steady ticking so I'm pretty sure it's not the "click of death". I just couldn't find mention of this noise when I did a search here so I thought something was irregular with the drive.

Not necessarily. The most effort on a drive is the spin up and spin down processes. That's where most of the wear and tear comes from, not from constant spinning.

I found this which seems to pertain to the same problem:

Apple - Support - Discussions - normal harddrive noise ...

From what I gather the sound may be the head parking on the drive (120GB Fujitsu). I think I have it on a fairly steady surface so the motion sensor shouldn't be acting up. Also, I would think that the suggestion Simon made about unchecking the energy saver option would have stopped it. I may just end up taking it to an Apple Store to see what they say.
