Hey.

I wanted to refomat my Macbook running Tiger. I put the music/movies/all that stuff I wanted to keep on some discs and put in the OS X install disc. After a few attempts to restart while holding C and things like that to reformat and install (which never ended up working... I had to just manual shutdown and try again) I turned it off to try again and now I can't get to my log in screen or anything. This sucks Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Edit: I figured I'd add a few more things. Right now I have the Tiger install disc in the disc drive, and whenever I start my macbook up it goes to that gray screen with the apple symbol above the spinning circle thing. I can hear the disc spin in the drive for about two seconds and then slowly stop.

Start up in verbose mode. See if there are any notable error messages.

The errors I'm getting...

SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC = 0x02, ASCQ = 0x00

The above message will show up five times, then I get

disk1s3: I/O error.

after that the SAM message will go five more time... also the bolded part will sometimes say 09 instead of 02

Thanks for the reply ... but I'm still broken. Edit: is it safe for me to manual shutdown manually out of single user mode? It won't let me reboot for some reason.

Turn on the MacBook and immediately hold down the trackpad button, the computer should then eject the disc and boot into your old installation, assuming you haven't managed to erase it.

Next, you either need a new optical drive or disc, most likely a new disc.
