If one wants to upgrade from a MB to a MBP, can the MB's hard drive (BootCamp partition and all) be moved directly into the new MBP, or would there be incompatibilities?

Assuming the MacOS X version on the MB hard drive is newer than the version originally shipped with the MBP, yes (in other words, if the MBP shipped with 10.4.9 and your MB hard drive has 10.4.10, you're fine). If not, the MacOS X side not boot properly. You will need to update your BootCamp drivers after swapping them, but that is pretty easy.

Note that the MBP hard drive isn't nearly as easy to access as the MB hard drive, and exchanging it yourself _may_ void the warranty on your MBP.

I was in exactly the same boat a couple of months ago. It didn't work. Once I installed the drive in the MBP, it kernel panicked on boot... twice. I ended up going with an Archive & Install, which worked just fine.

As long as you don't install a system older than the hardware you're fine. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

And if it doesn't work for whatever reason you can still boot from the install DVD and do an upgrade or A&I.
