I'm sorry if this is already posted somewhere. I found older posts that were similar, but they said to refer to pg. 24 of the user guide. Pg 24,and the rest of the manual for that matter, do not mention anything about calibrating the battery. Everything seems to say that you can just unpack the machine and start using it. I was wondering if with the new machines and new batteries you still need to calibrate before using. I.e. fully charge and run down, etc. Apple's website has instructions for calibrating, but it is in an old article, from 2006 I believe. The fact that nothing is mentioned in the manual makes me think that maybe I don't have to do this? I'm just excited to start using my new MBP! Thanks.

Batteries have to be calibrated because of the way they measure the remaining charge. Or don't. The actual remaining charge cannot be directly measured, so the battery has to keep track of how much charge goes in and out. This means it needs to know how much it had to start with. Draining and fully recharging the battery resets this figure in the battery's power management system. Batteries tend to stop charging to 100% every few months. This is why recalibration is recommended every few months. Also if your battery charges to less than about 96%. It won't to recalibrate yours, but if it charges to 100%, its certainly not a necessity. I would hope Apple did this when the loaded on the Machines OS before shipping it to you, but you never know how long its been on a shelf. They do deliberately leave some charge in them, since storing them when flat will shorten their lifespan.
