So everything was running fine and my computer then just locked up. So I forced rebooted by holding down the power button to shut it down and reboot. It rebooted to the Apple logo screen and the spinning gray cursor. Oh no!
So I popped in the OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD and booted off that, located the HD and started doing a drive permission fix using Disk Utility. I was running low on battery life at the time and since I did not have my charger, I forcibly powered down the MacBook using the power button.
Upon reconnecting the power cable a day later (it was at the office), I booted off the OS X DVD again and it did not recognize the HD (Disk Utility and Apple System Profiler). I took out the DVD and tried booting in Single User Mode, Verbose Mode, Safe Mode and other stuff, but all I get is a folder with the question mark. I also have tried resetting the SMU and the PRAM to no avail. Thoughts?
Standard MacBook config...1.83 GHz. 1GB RAM, Combo drive

You could try hooking the drive up to another computer externally and then see if that works. Is it a Seagate? Could be one of the ones that kill themselves. Hopefully with Leopard and Time Machine, you had a full backup

I don't have an external drive. I looked at some Apple Support forums and a lot of people seem to be having the same problems. It looks like a problem with first generation MacBooks.
Apple - Support - Discussions - Hard drive failure?? ...
There is a link on MacNN's front page about firmware 7.01. How can I check my firmware if my drive is dead? I assume that there should be a corresponding drive number to the firmware number provided that the firmware has not been updated.
Retrodata - Data Recovery Experts - Important notice : Users of Apple Macbooks
I have not opened my MacBook up yet due to the lack of time, but I guess since it is out of warranty, then it should be OK. Or should I wait for Apple to possibly have a recall regarding this issue?

Is the HDD recognised by System Profiler when booted from the install CD?
The HDD is easy to get out of the MacBooks, it lives with the battery underneath the MacBook and slides out.
I'd suggest picking up an external 2.5" SATA to USB/Firewire enclosure and seeing if any data can be retrived that way.

The HDD is not recognized by any means as far as I know. The computer froze just like the ones on the Apple Support forum before dying. I will check the HDD tonight and see if it is a Seagate or not.

I'm 99% sure that on the Seagate desktop drives that I've just RMA'd, it said the firmware version on the label on the top, you could check the label on yours to see if it gives you a firmware version.

Well, I opened it up and surprisingly enough, it is a Fujitsu drive. I wonder if they are also responsible for having drive problems? I'm thinking of selling the MacBook sans HDD and buying a new MacBook because I have a $500 computer credit from my company.

You might as well. Heck, if you were in the UK and the price was right, I'd buy it.
