So I was considering whether to get a macbook pro for christmas, and I know the guide to when to buy a mac says that mbp's are nearing the end of their product cycle so I should wait... but in all reality there doesn't seem to be major changes (just incremental increases) Is there any chance that apple will redesign the physical look of the mbps? ie go with a thinner screen a la sony vaios now that they've got led backlighting? or any sort of change (hardware or otherwise) that is worth waiting for? I don't really need an mbp urgently... just nice to not have to pay for it if i get it for christmas

get it for christmas then. It'll save you 2-3 thousand. I haven't seen any news on the rumor sites about a redesign or serious upgrade soon, especially the rest of this year.

I doubt there's any serious redesign coming. I mean, look at the MBP vs the Powerbooks, they didn't even really change the design then. I think Apple likes how they look a lot right now.

Very low chance of a redesign... and the upgrade will be pretty minor: 2.6Ghz/6MB cache, maybe 8800M GT graphics (twice as fast as 8600M, but it would probably be underclocked), and marginal drive capacity increases.

Go ahead and get one for Christmas, you'll be happy. I can't think of many ways that Apple could seriously upgrade the MacBook Pro in the near future.

just go ahead and get it now if you need it now... otherwise you'll be waiting forever for the next best thing... i was considering waiting much like you, but i just took the plunge... i'm typing this as we speak on my new macbook pro 15" (only got the 2.2, w/ 128 video, but upgraded to the 200GB 7200rpm drive... for me this is plenty... didn't feel the need to go top of the line... and besides, if something really revolutionary does come out... make it a bit easier to upgrade since i didn't break the bank on this one).... but so far LOVING it and not regretting it one bit... I say if you need it now... You shouldn't wait.

cheers
