I'm thinking something/someone might be bombarding your computer with packets while it's plugged in, causing major hiccups. Some kind of DoS attack launched by a jealous fellow student perhaps? :-P

That's the only reason I can think of for such behaviour while the cable is plugged in.

That definitely shouldn't be happening. What do you see in Activity Monitor when this is occurring?

Organize by % CPU and see if any processes spike. Also check to see if there are spikes in networking activity.

Not the graphs...the list of processes above. There may be something being run by the system (not you) that is causing the problem. And those spikes on the network graph may be part of the problem.

You need to view all processes, this can be done using the menus in the menu bar (I can't remember where it is). You need to arrange the processes by CPU speed, click the CPU column header until the arrow points downwards so that it arranges by highest first.

Well there's nothing obviously having a munch at the CPU there. Were you hooked up via Ethernet cable when that was taken or not?
