I have a strange problem with my original 2.0GHz 15" MacBook Pro: the system seems to be randomly powering itself on, even with no peripherals attached. This can result in random complete battery drains even though the battery seems to be in good health (3.5 hours run time).
A few days ago I came home from work and found my MBP in a strange state. I had powered it down completely before leaving for work, but then it would not boot. I then noticed that the case was as hot as it would normally be when in use and the caps lock light was slightly lit. Eventually I reset the PMU (removed battery and power adapter, then held down the power key for 10 seconds) and the computer booted normally.
Then last night I fully charged the battery in the evening, powered down the machine and disconnected all peripherals, including the power adapter. This morning when I came to boot it up on the train, the battery was completely exhausted - so I guess it must have randomly powered up during the night and run the battery down.
Does anyone have any ideas of things to try? I've already tried a PMU reset, but obviously this has not solved the problem. Apart from the obvious inconvenience of not being able to reliably use the machine on battery, I'm worried that it will start doing these random startups when packed away in a bag and end up cooking itself from the inside out.
thanks,
Andrew
