yeah, my 2.4ghz SR MBPro (Tiger 4.11) was working fine until the most recent auto OS update a couple weekends ago. Now, whenever I put it to sleep... it will wake up on its own about 10 to 20 seconds later! Not sure what to do... and I hate having to shut down everytime - making me restart my work pre-processes/organization each day.

Anyone else had similar problems?

I haven't had much time to do trial and error... Example: I'd like to see if this happens when I have my 2 external drives disconnected, as well as my 2nd screen disconnected. But nevertheless, it shouldn't happen period - as my system was working fine before.

any ideas?? thanks!!

Have a look at your system logs. Filter for the term 'sleep'. Might tell you what is causing it.

I've been having this problem now for months and months. Thanks to another Macbook Pro having sleep issues (this one in warranty), I was able to grill the product support specialists at Apple about the possible causes of this issue.

Here's the short version. The only two (hardware) things that are likely to cause this problem are the SMC controller and the magnetic sleep switch. If the SMC is the culprit, then there will be other symptoms, like problems turning the machine on, energy saver preferences spontaneously changing to default, clock problems, and so on. You can address this problem by resetting the SMC or getting Apple to replace it.

If it's the sleep switch, then this is a hardware issue that really only Apple can address. The sleep switch gets replaced when the top case assembly (the bit with the speaker grills, the keyboard, the trackpad, and so on) gets replaced. I had this replaced on my machine for a separate problem (bad "Z" key on the keyboard), and it didn't solve the problem for me.

The problem could be software. If an application fails to suspend itself quickly enough, it could actually wake the computer back up while it's feverishly trying to suspend itself. The only way I can think of to test this would be to create another user account (with no login items) and try putting the machine to sleep a few times.

Does this help?

Thanks for the replies... I haven't seen this "wake up" problem happen again for about a week. During this time, I haven't been using my FTP software, which I would keep open and running a lot previously. (I use Pirate FTP or whatver it's called. Not in front of it right now). So, it could've been that software, as mark suggested. maybe...
I was also using Dreamweaver CS3 and Photoshop CS3. I'll look into my sys logs and see if "sleep" is easy to find.

A new problem that has happend twice is ... when I go to manually put the machine to sleep. It sits there for a second, and then the LED screen slowly, line-by-line gets darker. Then a huge power symbol comes up with a message forcing me to shut down/restart. wow... this is no good. Maybe the machine is over heating??? I dunno. It's still under warranty, I just hate to be without my computer if I have to send it in.. But if this problem continues, I guess that's my only option.

thanks for your help. anyone with clues about the "force shut down/restart" screen... I'm all ears!

You could also trying disabling "Wake for Network ethernet administrator access" in the Energy preferences.

Try disabling Bluetooth and see if that helps. Better yet, unplug everything and add peripherals one at a time to see if any cause problems. I have a similar issue, and I think my mouse is the problem.

Plugging/unplugging USB devices after sleep will cause it to wake. Turn off the BT device wake pref. Try using alt/opt-cmd-eject to sleep it instead of just closing the lid.

Do you have anything in your ExpressCard slot? I've found that if I leave my Kensington ExpressCard SD reader in the slot when I put my MBP to sleep, it will spontaneously wake back up after about ten seconds.
