Given Apple's laptops don't seem to be superior to other manufacturers anymore -

Can I just buy a cheap Dell or something and trick it into running OS X?

Apple better bloody well stop us loyal, long term fanatics around and get back to focusing on building superior machines.

(Just did that to use the censor thing - again, laced with sarcasm here - but quite serious about the question, given the current state of Apple's laptop line)

Yes, but not in a way that can be discussed on this forum. Happy Googling.

You can't talk about it here, but you can talk about it at OSx86 Project.

dude, dont bother with windows. I'm a computer science major at college, I made the mistake of getting windows for my macbook, I never use it. mac can run windows programs, like power point and word. otherwise, everything with mac os is better than windows. If your into gaming, get a 360, and keep your computer for other things that 360's can't do.

I think the OP is wanting to run OSX on a generic x86 machine, not windows on a Mac.

And how is this in any way about MacBooks? To install anything from OS X LEGALLY, it has to be on Apple-branded hardware. That's part of the license agreement. Since that agreement is enforceable at least SOMEWHERE, and MacNN is NOT going to help anyone do anything that could hurt Apple, we specifically prohibit the discussion of trying to run OS X on non-Apple hardware.

Some users of the IBM Thinkpad laptops use OSX Leopard on their Thinkpads. Try this:

Yes, and MacNN specifically prohibits discussion of installing OS X on machines other than Apple branded hardware, because it's against the Apple license.

Google is your friend. Please use it.

But they also aren't worse. I read your other posts and you seem to freak out, because many problems are reported in internet boards. What do you expect? Only bitching will be posted. I don't go online to write "this is the 400th day with my MacBook, it is still perfectly fine working and I never had a problem". Which is true. I never had a problem.

On the other hand you reject the many problems of the G4 iBooks which were here reported, because your machine was totally fine.

Can I just buy a cheap Dell or something and trick it into running OS X?
You are sure you don't want to research in Dells support boards first?

Mac laptops are in general competitively priced with similarly capable PC laptops. Dell has a solid track record with corporate products, but with consumer laptops, not so much. I've been lucky, but I've seen plenty of horror stories about Dell laptops that just fell apart (figuratively or literally) after normal use, and not just online. Not so with Macs-you MUST keep in mind that what you see posted on the Internet is NOT indicative of the whole user population, just the ones that want to complain. People don't take time out from enjoying their Macs to say "I just wanted to let everyone know my MacBook rocks and everything is perfect. (It would be annoying if they did. ) Independent research points out that Apple still leads the pack in both reliability and service-see PC Magazine's annual service and reliability roundup for details. When a PC-oriented magazine rates Apple as best year after year, that means something.
