Ok i hooked up the monitor to it, the macbook detects it, but i am only seeing a blank screen on the monitor. The monitor says there is no signal. The cable form the monitor is dvi-i and it comes with a vga adaptor, so i hooked up my mini-dvi adapter to the vga end and nothing.

So you are going Macbook mini-DVI -> dongle VGA -> monitor VGA -> monitor DVI? Why? Just use the mini-DVI to DVI dongle. A signal may be getting lost in there somewhere, preventing an image from appearing. You could also try other display resolutions to see if that has any affect.

You misunderstood. Use the miniDVI-DVI adapter.

I have never heard of a monitor that used a DVI-I on its (presumably) attached cable. Usually, it's DVI-D. I'm guessing Xerox is skimping on an extra VGA port and removable cables by using the DVI-I to include the analog signals along with the digital. If that is the case, you should get one of these:
Amazon.com: DVI Adapter, DVI-D Male / DVI-I Female: Electronics
You'll still need the mini-DVI to DVI adaptor as well. This way you stay all digital, which is probably what you want.
