My PB has suddenly lost all audio: no output through internal speakers; no recognition of accessories at earphone/speaker port; no digital audio signal. No chimes, warnings, CD sound, no sound from any application. Sound control panel under "Output" only will show "Internal Speakers" on the "Built-In Audio" port, also shows greyed-out volume slide bar and Mute box, with no ability to change, and a message "The selected device has no output controls." Using google search on "Powerbook G4 no audio" I found threads elsewhere on similar issues. I've zapped PRAM, reset open firmware, booted from OS X DVD, replaced system software with archive & install; left battery out for extended period; checked MIDI output rate; confirmed problem on all existing users plus new user. CONSOLE system log shows consistent "PSound assertion "0 !" blah blah "AppleOnboardAudio/PlatformInterfaceI2C_PlatformFunction.cpp" at line 393 and exits. No keypad control of volume (shows maxed out, but yet no sound) and I believe also no control of keyboard backlight. Apple level 2 tech says replace logic board, $800 just part, sorry that's it. Some outside posters report success replacing sound board, but is there a way to pin it there rather than logic board? There are many posts with similar problems that were software related (including a bunch of system 10.4 issues back a year ago or so) but no clear answers. I cannot find the Hardware Test disk for this computer, if I ever had one; even so, some have said this will report a logic board problem even when there isn't one, when multiple other sound issues are at the root of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? I cannot afford to repair the logic board right now, let alone replace the computer.

My USB can detect an external Mic, and in fact will also show it and control it as if it were a speaker in the Output window of the Sound control panel.

The conventional analogue speaker port won't detect anything. Is this an indication that the sound part of the logic board is okay, and it might be the sound card? It's an $800 difference in parts!
