Hi,

Tomorrow I will hopefully be getting a macbook pro 17" which comes without a power supply. At the moment I only have a 60w magsafe power adapater with my white macbook, will I be able to use this to charge the battery? I'm not sure if it will not work at all or if it will charge it only but not power it on etc and any knowledge on this would be appreciated!

Thanks for your time.

It may charge the battery when sleeping or shut down, but not during normal operation. I don't have a 17", so I can't check.

It will charge the battery while in operation, just not as quickly as the 85W adapter.

It should charge even with the machine on... I'd guess about a 30W charge rate at idle and perhaps 10W loaded.

Like the others mentioned, it works. I just find that it takes "ages." I leave my 60W charger at work, where I have my 15" MBP plugged into it throughout the day. By the time I leave for home my MBP is usually fully charged.

Thanks for the replies guys, in the end it has turned out to be a 17" Powerbook G4 (1.6ghz) so i'll need to research them power supplies now! (I still think it's a good deal for £200 ($400 USD), what do you think?)
