Hello,

I bought my MBP in September of this year. I do not remember what the specifications on the website said then, but I don't think the MBP has since been updated. Online it says the 15" comes with an 8x Superdrive. I remember this being the case when I bought mine as well, but I can't remember exactly.

I just burned my first DVD today. It was a data disc using Finder. The max speed (As indicated by Finder) was 4x. I checked out system profiler and here is what is says (I have indicated in Bold what I believe to be most important):

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

Firmware Revision: AP09
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:
Type: DVD+R
ID: RITEK R03
Blank: Yes
Erasable: No
Overwritable: Yes
Appendable: Yes
Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x

I was wondering if anyone can explain what is going on here. Am I wrong, or was I wronged, or something else all together?

Thanks!

It's probably a limitation of the disc - cheap media will not be capable of burning at full speed.

The DVD disc I used says 8x on it.

Also, I am not sure that explains what is written in the system profiler.

The System Profiler shows the write speeds that the disc, not the drive, are capable of. If you have any alternative media, try that and see if it works.
