Hey there,
I have been a pc user for 15 years and it came the time to buy a laptop for school. So i decided to try a mac. the turd at the store convinced me the macbook was the one for me. so i brought it home and it took some time getting used to, but i finally had to install vista via bootcamp due to the limited applications.
not a big deal.
but my major problem is the fan noise! starting up the first time of the day the fan kicks into high gear within minutes and sounds like a jet engine taking off. its so loud that i cannot sit in class because it distracts others around me. i googled around and found this to be a common problem with macbooks so i installed Fan Control and it stated that my left fan is funning at 6400rpm and my right one is -1.
does this mean its broken? is this why my fan is sooooooo loud?
i called apple and they said reset the smc which i did and it fixed it for maybe 5 minutes then back to the jet take off.
the weird thing is, while running in vista there is no fan noise unless im under high cpu load?
what should i do?

Just return it to the 'turd' if you dislike it so much.

i have no clue whats up with your macbook. i have no problem with mine its one of the quietest laptops ive ever owned. try installing fan control and setting it to like 2000 rpms thats what mines at. its a little above the minimum to keep it a little cooler but its still very quiet.

I did notice the "Jet taking off" sound myself when I got my Macbook too. Usually it only happens when I'm doing a lot at once. Quick question, is it safe to control the fan in your Macbook? I may consider doing it as well. Don't mean to hijack the thread. =]

well i'd like to give it a try instead of just giving up. try to trouble shoot. and i say he's a turd because he was very very pushy and aggressive in trying to get a sale.
it seems to be a mac software problem. i am using no applications, fresh from boot and the jet takes off again. the laptop hasn't even been on for 2 minutes. the keyboard is still cold.
i did an experiment today.
i've had my computer on ALL day in vista, doing various things, photoshop, gaming, homework and the fan has turned on in certain situations and only for maybe 10-20 minutes at a time. then it goes back to completely silent.
does anyone know why? is there an update i can give my mac so that it relizes its not sitting in the oven and there is no need to run the fans at 6400+rpm.

why don't you send your mac to sleep before you go to lesson and then wake it up in there? It might be just the booting up that seems to be the problem.
Btw, what spec is your mac, and do you have it opening any programs immediately on startup?
Also, its when you tend to use alot of the CPU when the fans start going crazy, so check out the activity monitor to see whats going on.

its not booting thats the problem. i have nothing running. zero applications. and the fans are running at 6400+rpm. i have left it on for a few hours doing nothing. just sitting there on the desktop and the fans never calmed down. im fine with loud fans under high cpu load, that is to be expected with every laptop. but this is for no reason. they just constantly are running at full speed.
the fans behave normally in windows. but not in leopard.
i have a white 13" macbook upgraded to leopard.

When you next boot it up, check Activity Montior (it's in Applications>Utilities - make sure you're viewing 'All Processes' and see if something is pegging the CPU at 100%. Do you have any other fan control apps/extensions running?
The hardware doesn't sound faulty, because it works fine in Vista.
If worst comes to worst, you'll have to try an Archive and Install of OS X to see if that fixes anything.

You're welcome.
What printer do you have? I remember reading that the software for a certain brand of printer was causing this problem for someone else, I think it may have been Canon. Got a Canon printer?
