I got a Core Duo MacBook, bought two 2 gig DIMMs, turns out they don't work... I'm wondering if it's just cheap/bad RAM or if for some reason my MacBook can't take more than 3 like Apple-history says, I figured it was just a limit Apple said it had but they just went with what was economical at the time.

If it's one of these, then it can only take a maximum of 2 GB (1 in each slot).

Macbook Core Duo limit = 2 GB
MacBook Core 2 Duo until Nov 2007= 3 GB
MacBook Core 2 Duo presently = 4 GB

Why? Chipset.
Solution for OP? Return purchase or exchange for a 2 GB kit (2x1GB)
Lesson learned? Apple can say some arbitrary things, like that the first C2D MB could only handle 2 GB, but sometimes they are not making things up, as in this case. Do research before you buy, it is as simple as wikipedia: MacBook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Core Duo case, it's Apple's crippled firmware. The chipset (945 mobile) supports 4GB physical/3GB addressable, but Macs are limited to 2GB.

I have a core duo 2, with 4gigs ram. When I look at about this mac it says 4 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram, but when I look in the activity monitor it says 3.00gb total.

Is this the firmware limitation and thus i really don't have 4 gigs available?

Yes, the first C2D machines had the 3 GB limitation as well.

There is a sticky thread that already answers all these question. Could we have a lock here please?
