I have just been given the funds to purchase a new MacBook Pro 17", My question is, should I wait until after MacWorld next week, after NAB in April, or buy it now and hope it isn't obsolete after either event?

What Cold Warrior said. And don't worry about it becoming "obsolete." Newer tech hardware constantly becomes available but that does not make previous hardware "obsolete." A new MBP, even if purchased right before a revision, will be a solid productive tool for years. The attitude many folks express about how scr*wed they are when the inevitable upgrade comes out is IMO ridiculous. Constantly falling prices and improving tech is a good thing.

P.S. I have a 17" C2D MBP with matte screen and I will never go back to 15"...

P.P.S. And load that sucker up with max RAM from OWC Find the latest Performance Upgrades, Firewire and USB Hard Drives, SATA, Memory, Laptop Battery, and more at OWC or Crucial.

My Core Duo MBP is hardly "obsolete." Wait to see if something new comes out of Macworld and choose accordingly then. Waiting longer is just an exercise in frustration.

New CPUs are out, new GPUs are out, the current model is pretty old... yea, an update is imminent even if it doesn't come at MWSF (they've announced plenty of things later in Jan/Feb).

Hopefully we'll get a high-res 15" this time; maybe eSATA and HDMI too.

So I'll wait until next week. Another question Is there any way to fit the 160 or 200 gig 7200 rpm hard drive into a Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz?

I haven't seen any 7200RPM ATA-6 drives bigger than the 100GB Hitachi.

I saved money a lot by buying a used 3 months old MBP last revision (2.2ghz) with applecare for only $1300 (found on craigslist and yes craigslist is awesome!!!) so my opinion is depend if you have the money to buy new then wait till macworld but if you have time to shop around and get the best deal out there then shop around definitely do that.

My wife says I assume everyone knows what I know and should drop the use of acronyms. The National Association of Broadcasters Convention is where you get to see the really expensive toys. Anything you can imagine dealing with Audio/Video/Internet etc. Apple always has a large booth and introduces something new, usually related to Final Cut Pro. If you get the chance - GO!
If you are a good Muslim you have to go to Mecca.
If you are a biker you have to go to Sturgis.
If you are any form of technogeek you really need to go to NAB in Las Vegas in April.

By the way...how do you get the cute little thingies on the right into your message?

I think you're talking about the signature (accessible through the User CP link in the navigation bar). Just remember to follow the rules for signatures when you make one.
