With all the threads on battery life I thought you guys would be interested in this article I read: Breakthrough Could Mean 40-Hour Laptop Batteries (NewsFactor) by NewsFactor: Yahoo! Tech

Basically they have just developed a new type of battery that can now potentially make laptops run for 40 hours or roughly two days between recharges. That's a huge jump from the 5 hours some people are getting.

This technology not only benefits laptops but every other electronic device that runs on rechargeable batteries. I can't wait until these new batteries are available.

I saw this one. It sounds a little like another I saw a while back which I think had something to do with Toshiba or Hitachi. It too involved increasing the volume of one or both of the electrodes using some kind of nanotech. I forget the sort of power output and longevity they were claiming, but I recall it charged to 95% of its capacity in a minute and 100% in only five.
That was over a year ago I think and it mentioned that they would start with car batteries (big ones for electric cars, not just for internal combustion ignition systems), then start to shrink the technology. It could be some time before we see these in devices on shelves. Even if the technology and the manufacturing yield scale quickly, there is doubtless all sorts of red tape associated with patents and licensing deals.

Look forward to them though. The future is getting here....... at last!

When I wake my PowerBook up from sleep it says it has 58 hours of battery life

Seriously, a 40 hour battery is insane, but that would be really sweet.

Yeah finally. For some devices it can get kind of annoying to charge the battery again only a few hours after I just charged them. Modern electronics just require a lot more power than their previous generations so they eat up batteries like crazy. Until now battery technology has had a hard time trying to keep up.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm getting tired of constantly charging my devices almost every night such as my PDA, cellphone, laptop, iPod, etc. It feels like I have to babysit my electronics too much. I need less chores in my life and not more.
