I have one of the early MBPs from spring of 2006. A few months ago I noticed that whenever I turn on the display, be it by powering up or just coming out of sleep, about 30-40 percent of the screen is noticeably darker and takes about 20-30 seconds to get back to normal.

Just wondering what this is due to?

Cold cathode lamps are a lot like compact florescent lamps-they do take a bit to come up to their normal brightness. It's not a problem. However, if it takes increasingly longer and longer for the screen to come to its full brightness, then you may have a problem.
