Will this work on a non-MacBook Air? The requirements list only the MacBook Air. Seems silly if it's just a standard USB CD/DVD drive. I'm in need of an external burner that I can take from computer to computer and Apple's just looks damn cool.

Engadget and Gizmodo tested their review units today and found that nothing can power the drive short of an MBA. Even a powered USB hub doesn't provide enough power for the drive. So no, it won't work with anything else.

F*ck USB.
Anyone know if this will work with OS X? The FireWire one lists OS X specifically, but this one doesn't:
LaCie - Portable DVD±RW with LightScribe, Design by Sam Hecht - Hi-Speed USB 2.0
Thanks

Actually, I just realised that though I've burnt dual layer DVDs with the thing, I've yet to try that LightScribe feature, so couldn't tell you about that.

Get the FireWire version instead if this is a viable option for you. Won't require two USB ports to power it, just one FireWire.

Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple were to phase out FireWire in the next few years, maybe not completely, but possibly on the MacBooks. HD video cameras that record directly to internal flash/hard drive usually connect via USB and it just seems the direction Apple are moving. Which doesn't mean the FireWire version wouldn't be better for all kinds of reasons, especially if the current machine you want to use it with has it, just that in a couple of years you might not be able to use it with your new computer. How much that matters to you is the deciding factor, I guess.

A bit more expensive and not as slick, but the LG GSA-E50L ($120 Best Buy) is a compact USB powered DVD-writer. Works fine for me using only one port, so I'm guessing it'd work with an MBA too.
