My USB ports have died on me while on the road. However, for some odd reason it can recognize/mount my iPod. But the important thing is for me to access my data on my HD through the USB ports. (Not to mention be able to use a mouse or hookup a printer, etc.) I went to see a technician who said my motherboard is fried and that it would take about $750 to replace it. I would just as soon like to get a new machine (again, which one??? but that's an entirely different question.) but I would like to be able to get at my data and still be able to use it. I was also told that I could use the FW port which still works. Question: would a FW+USB hub hooked up to the FW port be a solution?

Thanks in advance for any other ideas you could share.

P.S. Sorry for using 'hubs' instead of 'ports' in the subject heading of the post.

Connect a Firewire cable from this computer to another computer and boot up this machine in Firewire target disk mode (hold "T" key at boot). The hard drive will mount on the other machine so you can get your stuff off the drive.

You can get a USB2 PCMCIA card & You are back in Business. Firewire is faster, you will need usb for your printer and mouse etc.

If it can recognize and mount your iPod via USB, doesn't that indicate that the USB port is good? Have you tried resetting the PMU and NVRAM?

Might work or it may be it is not getting power from motherboard to usb. Ipod still has a charge and can be accessed without power?

If the iPod is connected via USB, and shows up, then that USB port is good. I've had 2 USB mice fail because the cables went bad, presumably where they go into the mice.

alamosf: what usb devices did you test the ports with and do those devices work on any other computers? What Powerbook model are you using?

romeosc: USB2 card? sorry for my ignorance, but how is this done? there aren't any slots in the machine? and yes, ipod still has a charge and can be accessed w/o power.

amazing: i've used different cables for my camera to no avail, and when i connected my camera to another mac (at a store) it had no problem mounting.

BTW: i'm using a 12" G4 PowerBook, 1.5ghz circa '04 (or '05?) w 2 USB and 1 FW ports.

Thanks again guys.

about the proposed card: when you didn't specify which PB you had, the assumption was that it was a 15" which has a card slot. Since you've got a 12" there's no card slot.

Again: if the iPod mounts, then USB is OK. Have you tried USB devices other than your camera? And, finally, have you tried the advice above about the PMU and NVRAM? Those procedures have revived USB ports in the past.
