I was wondering if I could install a 1GB memory card with a 2GB card in my MB for a total of 3GB. I already have a 1GB card and thought about just picking up a 2GB to stick in there with it, but I didn't know if this was advisable.

I've got a May 2007 MacBook which only uses up to 3GB RAM. I installed 4GB due to the extra 1GB didn't cost much more. Here's info about not needing to match pairs of RAM and the performance differences:

There's a slight performance penalty in some games (and other applications that need VRAM bandwidth), but 2+1GB is no worse than just 1GB from that perspective.

If you've got a MacBook taht will address a max of 3GB then 2+1 will be faster than 1GB by a good margin, especially if you use an RAM intensive apps.

If you can address 4GB then 2+2 will be fastest but 2+1 will still be faster overall than say 1+1

Put as much as you can in. With current RAM prices there's no real reason not to have any Mac (well maybe not one of the new 8 cores), maxxed out.

Oh darn, I just learned my original MacBook 1.83ghz will only address 2GB. So, that solved my problem for me. I just ordered another gig. I can't wait until I get my new MBP from work, then I can give this little guy to the wife.

May as well buy a pair of 2GBs; if you sell your Macbook later, you can drop in the old memory and take the 4GB to your new machine.

Well a forum search should have led you to this thread
http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-noteb...-ram-upgrades/

And the very first post will tell you that 2GB is the limit. No offense, but this thread is redundant.

As Simon said, this whole topic is covered pretty well in the MacBook RAM sticky.
