There's 2 basic approaches to laptop backpacks:

If you're laptop-proud, you get one that screams that you have a high-end laptop and which also screams that you're a prime ripoff target. These cases cost more. Not so good if you're commuting on public transport.

If you want to more unobtrusive, you get something that looks more like a regular, nondescript backpack. Or you get a case that fits inside your backpack.

Anyway, here's a couple of suggestions, which you might want to see if you can scope out locally before buying, just to see which one you like best:

Maxxum Computer Backpack (RED) by Wenger SwissGear (r) Maker of the Genuine Swiss Army Knife(tm) - Buy.com

This is the one I'd get:

Synergy Laptop Backpack by Wenger SwissGear (r) Maker of the Genuine Swiss Army Knife(tm) - Buy.com

If you want something that fits inside your present backpack: It's top-loading, so you just slip it into your run-of-the-mill backpack:

marware makes some outstanding neoprene sleeves that you can put your laptop into & then put it into a regular backpack. I use one all the time & it works great.

You don't have to repeat yourself.

For what it's worth.... I have the Swiss Army and I love it. However cat's pissing on it tend to put me off so I'm looking for another bag. However now my needs have changed and I don't need so much gear. I'm looking at the Oakley Sandbag AP, the first model. It is a bit more pricey but I'm telling you about it because of the adaptable payload design. It seems to be a new idea in how you carry your stuff.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Nope, $70 at Walmart.com. $80 at microcenter.

Anyway, I saw it again in person at microcenter, it's really a great backpack, lots of pockets to stash stuff in.

Get some scrap 6-9mm wetsuit neoprene (used is fine) from a dive shop and a can of black neoprene cement and build yourself a sleeve (you can glue very strong neoprene butt joints if you first let multiple layers of cement dry). Then just toss that into any backpack, the scruffier the better, if you want to minimize theft. Note that wetsuit neoprene is denser and more protective than many of the premade neoprene sleeves like the Incase sleeve that Apple sells.

If you want spiffy, peruse the sticky backpack thread at the top of the forum and check out all the links.

I have had two Swiss Army backpacks and carried my macbook in both. They were great backpacks. I doubt you'd be unhappy if you picked one of with a compartment for a laptop.
