I just purchased a new, slightly outdated MBP 17" from MacMall. My Apple Remote, however, doesn't seem to be working. I've verified that IR isn't turned off in System Preferences and tried pairing it to my MBP. Finally, I pointed it at the built-in iSight camera but couldn't see the beam. Could the battery actually be bad right out of the box, having never been used?

Seems unlikely.

The battery is a cr2032 I believe. it's a common bios battery for PC motherboards.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like I need to call Apple.

Just go to Radioshack and try a new battery. You can carefully remove the ends of the Apple Remote with a screwdriver or like instrument then slide the components out.

I thought about that, but my local Radio Shack is really bad about allowing me to return open items.

I called Apple and after a one hour hold (it was ok, just did it during my commute home) they were sending out a new one.

That's too bad, but I'm glad that Apple could help. Let us know if the new one works, I'm sort of interested in seeing this resolution.

I got my new remote in the mail today and it works fine! Sending the old one back to Apple.
