what are your thoughts on the looks, release date, and configs of the new macbook pro's?
I am going to be looking to get 2 of them when they finally drop.
I have to get a 17inch and a 15inch.

I reckon the design will stay the same, maybe an improved processor, bigger trackpad with all the new funky stuff the MBA has (deffo).
Don't know what else they could do.

Same form factor, speed bump bigger drives yadda yadda yadda
I thnk apple may well hold off on the trackpad etc from the air to allow for some product differentiation, at least for this upgrade.

I would bet a case redesign for either this next revision or the one after. I can't see how they wouldn't add the new trackpad to it either. How can one call it a pro model if the macbook air has a significant feature the mbp doesn't?
I'm looking for a possible blu-ray upgrade in the next 3 or 4 revisions.

FWIW I though apple said that the new trackpad features were done through software.

Expect the same design but with the larger trackpad.
Expect Merom/Crestline, probably T9500 (2.6 / 6MB / 800 MHz / 35 W) and T9300 (2.5 / 6MB / 800 MHz / 35 W). Don't expect any big improvements in terms of the GPU.

Perhaps an underclocked 8800M for the GPU (or 9600M if they wait long enough!), but probably stay with the 8600M GT.

People should be cautious about some future Nvidia 'updates'. The 9300M GT will be a rebranded 8400M GT and the 9500M GS is a perfect copy of the 8600M GT. Nvidia is playing the name game (again).

That would be very un-Apple so to speak… I hope a new design arrives, the current case while gorgeous is five years old, but then you can't lower the value of the MB Air uniqueness…

Well for a start I'm hoping they come out for my birthday on Tuesday, even though I won't find out if they do until Wednesday NZ time.
I'd like to see 2.8GHz as standard on the upper 15" model, and maybe a higher res option on the 15" as well. A single 2GB RAM slot option would be nice, to make it easier to eventually upgrade rather than going for 4 from the start, but they don't seem to like doing that. Similarly with a 7200RPM hard drive as standard, and bigger hard drives as standard as well.
Other than that .. well I can dream of a smaller model to properly replace the 12" PowerBook, but, can't we all!

Not gonna happen. The 2.8 GHz C2D is a Merom XE (X9000) with a TDP of 44W. That's far beyond the 35W max TDP the MBP has been fitted with in the past. The top end part will be the T9500 at 2.6 GHz. Expect the X9000 only on the iMac. After the Penryn refresh (early June) you can expect a 2.8 GHz part in the MBP at 35 W (T9600).
