ok so i've kept the cloth that came packed between the keyboard and the screen of my new mbp, and i can't help but feel a bit silly putting this thing in between my laptop every time i turn it off. Is it really necessary? will the keyboard actually scratch the screen? (or will the grease from my fingers get transferred from the keyboard to my screen and etch it??) or are these old issues from previous generations?

I haven't had any issue with keyboard marks on my first Gen MBP. I've had it for about two years. I do use a keyboard protector for my Pismo PowerBook because those do have a know issue with that. If you are concerned about the keymarks, Marware Laptop and iPod Cases - Apple iPod Accessories and iPod nano Case Styles offers keyboard protection which would look less funny than the factory packaging.

This was an issue back with the Titanium G4 Powerbooks. I have not seen it on any aluminum machines since.
