Is there any way to connect a 17" PBG4 to a USB2 drive other than the Pcmcia slot?

I have a Adaptec USB2Connect card, but it rquires me to use a Y connector USB cable to power a

any of the WD250s I have. Sometimes they will boot with Y adapter sometimes I have to restart to get enough power using USB ports. I know the G4PBs USB ports are underpowered, but I hoped to use the Firewire 800 0r 400 ports.

I hate to use an external powersupply (depeats the purpose of a pocket drive!)
