Hi There, i'm trying to install Leopard on my 15" powerbook. I believe it has sufficient memory (just upgraded to 2 gig ram) and plenty of harddrive space (80G). processor 1.5mhz.
when I startup from the dvd, after I choose the language it gives me the message "MAX OSX can't be installed on this computer".

Anyone who can help?

Thanks!

Hmm. I have checked the specs and you should be fine. I wonder if you have an intel only version of the OSX. I thought they were universal though.. I was thinking about installing on my powerbook, so tell us how it goes.

are you trying to install it from the retail leopard disc or a restore disc from another mac?

Oh heck! I've seen this before!

If I'm remembering right it has something to do with the partition scheme. Leopard requires a GUID partition scheme on the hard drive.

Start up Disk Utility, click on your hard drive to highlight it (the drive model number - not the drive name), make sure the First Aid tab is selected (near the top of the window), and look at the bottom-center of the window. Does it say the Partition Scheme is GUID? If not, that's the problem.

The standard for Tiger and earlier was Apple Partition Map - but that will stop a Leopard install in its tracks.

Of course, if you have to partition your hard drive to make it GUID make sure you backup everything first!

In Disk Utility I cannot find the option to choose the 'GUID' partitioning option.

If I check my MacPro's Disk Utility I can click on 'options' and choose either GUID partition table, Apple Partition Map or Master Boot record. The G4 doesn't give me any of those options.

I'm pretty sure it must be possible on a Powerbook (as it's mentioned on the apple site)

more ideas anyone?
thanks a million.

My experience has been that a restore disc will *never* permit itself to be used on an older machine (or even newer).

A work-around *might* be:

Start up PB in Target-Disk mode (holding down 'T' while starting up) and use Restore Leopard disk inserted into MBP onto Targeted PB (just make sure you've got right HD targeted).
[Of course you'll need to back up PB first.]

Alt work-around. Use Restore Leopard disk onto EXTERNAL HD attached to MBP. Then see if you can get PB to start from that HD. If so, Copy Cloner that HD onto PB
[Of course you'll need to back up PB first.]

[NB: One could argue for paying the $119 from Amazon to get your own copy of Leopard.]

You can't install it on this machine using this disk. For starters, the MBP is intel and the Powerbook is PPC.

so they actually have G4 or G5 versions of the software?

They have a generic one that is sold over the counter that will install on anything that meets the min specs (800mz G4?). The one that comes with new machines will only install on that type of machine. For the record, Apple is pretty laid back about copy protection on its OS, there's no activation or that kind of crap. Don't abuse that - Leopard is pretty reasonably priced.
