So this is my second Macbook after the first one had to be replaced following 3 DVD drive failures (three, I say!). This one just got itself a new hard drive since the old one burned out.

Guess when? During a Leopard upgrade! Ironically, I lost a lot of data while trying to upgrade the Time Machine.

Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper. I suggested to the Applecare rep that they should save the trouble and put Leopard on the drive for me since installing it was what killed my hard drive.

Guess what? They did. Now, I don't know if that's SOP to just install the latest version of the OS on a hard drive replacement or what, but even if it is, that's good service. They could be greedy and make sure that nobody gets anything they don't pay extra for (in this case I didn't, I just bought Leopard, but they didn't ask for proof or anything), but instead they just fix the problem as quickly as possible (I sent my Macbook on Thursday afternoon; it came home to me this morning).

So Apple continues to enjoy my business despite another mechanical disaster. Now, I think I'll buy a Time Capsule...

That was sure ncie of them.

In the past when I've sent in my computers for drive failures they install the OS that originally came with the computer. Usually a downgrade in my case.

Then maybe she really did listen to me. Either way it was cool...like the extra gig of RAM they kicked in gratis when I had to have the original MacBook replaced.

Now, unfortunately, I've had some setbacks with the BackUp utility and my iPod that make me a little less enthusiastic of an Apple fan right this second.

Considering Apple does not make the DVD drive OR the hard drive, aren't you blaming the wrong company for reliability?

Since Apple selects those drives for inclusion in their product, they are responsible for their reliability in the Apple product. They warrant the whole thing, so having these parts fail, after Apple decided they were up to the challenge, IS Apple's concern. And it sounds like they came through very, very well.
