My macbook usually ran around 50 F under a moderate load. But now its running at 87 F and the fans are running constantly. I only have safari and ichat open. I also don't have it on any surfaces like a couch, its just been sitting on my table. Are my fans not doing its job? Is something wrong because my computer is running a lot hotter than usual.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications->Utilities and organize all processes by their %CPU use. What application(s) are listed near the top of the list? One of these processes is probably stuck, causing the fans to run.

Activity monitor
Safari
iChat
System IU server

Those are the first 4. None of them seem to be stuck. I've also restarted and after about 15 minutes, it starts again.

EDIT:
Ok, I missed something. It wasn't showing all processes and a process called NATD was taking up 90% of my system. I did a bit of research and its linking to my internet sharing. I share my internet through out my house. Is it normal for internet sharing to put such a strain on my macbook.

When you disable Internet sharing, does the temp go down and fans go off? NATD is network address translation, so it makes sense that internet sharing is causing the problem. If it keeps happening after turning sharing off then back on, there's something fishy going on. Others may have some ideas.

Yeah, after I disabled internet sharing the temperature went down and the fans slowed.

I was curious though if I am sharing from my airport to ethranet and I don't have a cable plugged in causes the problem. As I think back to each incident, I was sharing but I did not have anything plugged into my ethranet port.

sharing your connection in the system prefs like you're talking about means that another computer is connecting to YOUR computer instead of the router. You do NOT need that on. Unless you're sharing it with a bluetooth device like a pda or something. Otherwise turn it off. Every computer should be getting it's internet service from your router, the box between your cable/dsl modem and your computer. Its usually named dlink, belkin, airport express, linksys, etc... If you have no router get one. Its a lifesaver. Hardware filewalls will save you tons of grief. that's inside the router.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
