Hi, it's my Dad's 17" Powerbook G4, with a gig of ram, I installed leopard, like 2 weeks after leopard came out, so it's been on for a while. The white wheel spins with an occasional reboot. I would do the apple hardware test, because I've got 2 spare notebook HDs at home if i ever needed to replace a dead HD. I'm away and am using friend's laptop to type this. I do not really need the laptop, just want to use it before I die of boredom. Anything I can do before I get home? Could it be the actual leopard install is corrupt?

Maybe. What apps does he have open and is using? 1 GB RAM is small if he's using a number of applications. The spinning beach ball will be common, if that's the case.

No, it's not the beach ball, I meant on startup, I can't even get into leopard. Sorry for the misunderstanding, the wheel spins and spins, and I guess it's obvious its the OS, but I wanted to know if there was anything I could do before I got home.

Your post is slightly confusing, did you run the Apple Hardware Test or not?
Is the HDD making any clicking noises or is it particularly noisy. It's odd for OS X to stop booting unless some corruption has occurred or an update has gone awry or the HDD is failing.

I didn't intend for it to be confusing, that's my bad. The HD is spinning, and I hear some occasional reading, but it doesn't sound like it's enough to load leopard. It was after a software update, so I think it might be the OS. When I boot off the CD I always get a kernal panic. I am stuck here, when I try to load the hardware test and nothing happens, the same wheel spinning situation. I cannot decide if it's the HD or the partition of software. I might just throw in a 2.5" IDE drive and buy an enclosure for this one to recover the data, I don't wanna do anything that is unnecessary.

The kernel panics could be caused by faulty RAM, have you tried taking a stick out? Otherwise it does sound like the HDD could be going south and causing issues for the optical drive on the ATA bus.
