Hi, newbie here...
I blew the firewire/ethernet port on my 1.67 17" (HR)...yes, bummer. I need firewire for audio recording. So....do i fork out for a logic board replacement or replace the unit.
I have a pending sale on it for $850. For $950 I can buy a 15" Macbook pro 1.83 locally, used. Or, a refurb of a 2.3 MBP 15" from Apple.ca for $1399 with one year warranty. Also, there's a 2.16 MBP 17" with one year Apple Care at a local mac store, used for $1799.
Suggestions?? I've tried a firewire PC card and it 'sort of' worked...kind of glitchy. I think i should bail while i can sell the unit as is?!
Thanks! I'd miss the 17" for sure but $1799 is a big jump.

sell, but make sure the buyer knows the issues! as i always say, spend as much as you possibly can, you won't regret it. you can never add processing to a laptop!

Sell it. And like ide3308 already said, make sure the buyer knows he's buying a broken PB.
If I were you I'd get a refurb 15" 2.2 GHz MBP for $1449. It's as good as brand new, comes with the regular 1 year warranty (and the option of getting AC), and it will perform similarly to the current entry-level $1999 MBP.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your input...Buyer knows exactly what they're getting. It's a corporate guy who wants his PA to be able to work from home, office stuff only.
Why the MBP 2.2 15" ($1549) vs. the 17" 2.16 ($1799), which also has AC for a year from the reseller store? Is it because of the faster speed? I'm also in a bit of a crunch for time as i need to transfer over my files to a new computer, and the sale is pending on mine!
Thanks a bunch!
PS...this will be my only computer, hence the desire for 17"

Sell! After years of 15" and smaller I went to 17" a year and a half ago and I am unlikely to ever again buy smaller than a 17" MBP. If you liked 17" don't downgrade to 15" size! The benefit of extra screen real estate and pixels cannot be overstated.
As to speed, 2.3 vs. 2.17 is largely irrelevant, and 17" MBPs are typically 5-10% faster than equivalently spec'd 15" MBPs anyway.

Good choice.... once you have a 17" .... a smaller one seems like a toy!
A 17" with an external 22" monitor is great for productivity!

I'd sell it. Who knows what else is about to go. As for screen size, I went from a 17" PB to a 15.4" MBP and I prefer the latter because it is much easier to travel with. Plus, you are only giving up 1.6" of screen real estate instead of 2". Might not sound like much but that is a 20% difference right there.
When I'm at home, I have my MBP connected to a 23" LCD. But if you don't want an external LCD and you do most of your computing from home, then go for the 17".
