I recently purchased a dvi to video adapter for my powerbook G4 15" laptop. I plugged it in to my tv using a video cable and I get a diagonal striped pattern on the screen. All posts on the subject seem to indicate it is a no-brainer with image popping right up but I get nothing. I've tried all of the resolutions and mirroring steps. Always the same screen pattern. Any ideas? Most posts talk about color problems but I have read none with the scrambled image problem. I'm considering running it through my receiver like the DVD player is connected.

Check the Displays preferences or Displays menu at the top of the screen and see if TV resolutions are displayed. Try detaching and reattaching the dongle. If you still don't see TV resolutions listed, you may have a bad dongle. Exchange it.

Yes, as I said in my first post I tried all of the resolution settings (meaning I went to the Displays menu), nothing changes. You can see slight movement as the mouse moves around but this is all through the diagonal stripe pattern that I mentioned earlier.

I'm asking if it actually says "TV" or "Video Out" or "NTSC" (I don't remember what it is) in the list of available resolutions. What you're seeing sounds like the machine is not outputting TV-compatible signaling (might be trying to display VGA instead of NTSC or PAL).

If you can confirm the signaling is a TV video signal, then you probably need to replace the dongle. If a new dongle causes the same problem, there could be something wrong with you GPU or logic board. Can you successfully connect an external VGA monitor?

Turns out that the dvi to vga adapter is specific to G5s and will not work with G4s. So I found the svideo to composit adapter that came with it and that works. Thanks for your attention to this.
