I used my iPod headphones a few nights ago on my MacBook Pro 1st gen and now I get the stupid red glow out of the jack and no sound from the speakers. Even re-boots and putting the head phones in and out does not do anything.

WTF?

Next revision of the line, I am out of this problematic unit, definitely the most troublesome mac I have ever used.

The red glow means it thinks an optical audio device is attached; it's a pretty common problem and I found the following options through Google:

1) Poke it with a toothpick until it's fixed.
2) Run a more configurable operating system that lets you disable it.
3) Replace the logic board.

Did u check ur sound AND speaker config on the computer

plug in the headphones and then disconnect them again. Try it a couple times.
