I was waiting for WWDC before buying a new MacBook, just in case Stevie surprised us with new ones. Since they weren't released (not a big surprise), I am thinking it is safe to make a new purchase.

I was thinking of buying a new BlackBook with my educational discount, and get a free iPod. Then wait for the release of the Nehalem chipset before I make a plunge into a MacBook Pro.

I need a new MacBook as my O.G. Core Duo model isn't fast enough for me anymore.

What do you guys think?

Mac Buyer's Guide is neutral on Mac Books, plus with a discount and freebie why not ?

I think it's going to be a white before we see a MacBook upgrade.

Cantiga is delayed from May to July, pushing the MBP upgrade from ~June to ~August. The MacBook will trail that by a couple months (IIRC the integrated graphics version of Cantiga is further delayed, but it's a significant upgrade), so I'd figure September at the earliest and October or November more likely.

I think now is the time to buy a Macbook. They just recently in the last year upgraded the speed to 2.1GHZ for the base model and 2.4GHZ for the higher model. I think the Macbook is a solid product and I definitely stand by it, being a student myself. Good luck with your purchase!

Educational discount PLUS an iPod says "this is it!" to me. I don't see how you could go wrong.

By the way, I think I'm being dense but what is an "O.G. Core Duo?"

It could also stand for ORIGINAL GANGSTA!

I think I will make the plunge on a new BlackBook. The discount plus a free iPod Touch is very attractive. I could always sell the iPod to a non student friend and put that towards a 3G iPhone too

I think if I am going to wait for a case redesign and processor upgrade I will wait until Nehalem. The performance different over Penryn is anywhere from 22%-40% greater when at the same clock speed (search Engadget for article). So when that happens I probably wont be able to hold myself back from ordering a MacBook Pro.

For now, the BlackBook will be more than enough with 4gb RAM. Plus I will finally have a computer match all my wonderful Samsung electronics lol.

"Original generation" (or "gangsta" ) makes sense. I'd have called it "first gen" or something like that. Whatever. A BlackBook should do you very well. A number of my classmates have MacBooks, including one with a BlackBook, and over the last two years they've all done very well.

Thanks for the support guys. I'm pretty excited to pick up a new Mac. It's been too long since I unboxed a new Mac. I miss the smell lol...
