It boots up to a screen with an apple in the middle and stays there. I have reset the PMU as suggested ,to no avail. I reseated the memory chips, same result. .was working the day before.
Any one out there that can help ?..thanks, Ira

main thing would be to boot off the OS X install disk and use Disk Utility to check the HD. If the HD checks out OK, then do an archive and install.

Thanks, I will try that. The only thing is that there is a CD in that I can not eject.

Start the PowerBook up while holding the trackpad button and the CD will pop out.

Try powering it up and holding the trackpad button right after the chime.

I usually hold the space bar instead of the trackpad button. Does it make a sound like it is trying to eject?

People have tried various ways to get CDs to eject--and this one is the weirdest, but might actually work for you: Hold the laptop completely upside down while holding the trackpad button down during a startup.

Also, you can try booting into open firmware and ejecting the CD. You startup and immediately hold down the command+option+O+F keys, all at the same time, and keep holding the down, until you see text onscreen. Then you type:

eject cd

and hit return. Note the space between the 2 words.

Then you type:

macboot

and hit return, to do a restart.

Also, try resetting the PRAM. You do a restart and immediately hold down the option+command+P+R keys and continue holding the down through at least 4 chimes. Then release the keys and see if a restart proceeds normally.

Good luck.

Hooray, your first suggestion worked. The HD turned out to be bad. I replaced it and it works fine. Thanks for all the help.these forums are great when people can get help like that. One final question. How much ram can a G4 titanium take? Once again, thanks. Ira

Wow! You mean my advice on "holding it upside down" actually worked? How's that for weird Apple tech support? Sometime way in the future, I'm gonna watch a movie on my laptop in the headstand position...

HDs do go bad. At least with a PB it's easy to replace.
