Went to the local Apple Genius bar with my Powerbook G3, OS 9.2.2 and my PowerBook G4 running latest Leopard. I forgot the file sharing password and asked how I can reset it to ethernet connect the two notebooks...Can the password be changed using the boot up original CDs on both Powerbooks?

The Techs tried to change the password, with no effect. They tried to connect via IP address with no luck. Finally they conferenced as said that ethernet file sharing was no longer supported on a PowerBook G3 old OS 9x and the new Leopard OS. Is this true?

They also said that firewire connection wasn't possible between the two PowerBooks and OS systems...True?

The suggested that I buy a small USB Crucial 2 Gb Hard Drive to exchange files, I did and it worked...

What model/specs powerbook G3?

Also, the powerbook G3 models don't have an auto-sensing ethernet port IIRC. You'd need to use a crossover ethernet cable. But that doesn't help if you can't remember the file sharing password for the G3. Instead, you should just reverse the process: turn on file sharing on the G4, access it, and upload your files to it.

If you don't have a crossover cable, this could also be accomplished using a router and regular ethernet. Each machine would connect to the router and get an IP. Turn on file sharing for the G4, then browse for it on the G3.

If the G4 has auto-sensing ethernet, it shouldn't matter that the G3 doesn't (the G4 will figure out whether to cross transmit/receive or not) so a crossover cable may not be necessary. It doesn't hurt to try.

But CW's suggestion about connecting to the G4 instead of the G3 is the way to go.

I'm not sure why the geniuses couldn't figure this out.

Yeah, you're right. I got the mechanics twisted around somehow.

Because it's a job title and not a description? And possibly because between two people, with one of them not being enormously well versed in the technical terminology, it's easy to get the wrong idea about what the issue is and to try the wrong thing with this wrong idea of the issue. Basically, poor communications (not with geeks! ) leads to a lot of problems with technical support of any kind.

I haven't talked to a genius in a while. Do they still have that red phone as the hotline to Cupertino?

I thought that was an interesting gimmick.
