My battery died - I have been running the PB using only the mains cable but every time I start up after shutting down I have to reset the date and time!!

I don't want to buy a new battery to find I still have this problem I'd rather invest the money into a new MBP or MB Air.

Help sought please.

The reason it's losing time is because you don't have the battery installed to keep the capacitor inside the PowerBook charged to store the date and time. Even with the dead battery, it may be enough to keep the date and time.

I'm trying to remember, but I think I'm correct in saying that the PB G4 had an internal PRAM battery, so that the settings would be retained when you swapped batteries (on an airplane, for example.) Every PB had it except for the 12", which was more like a super-iBook in that respect.

I think that the battery that's dead. Here's a guide to replacing the PRAM battery.
