i was messing with internet sharing options, i ended up not changing anything, closed my macbook, came back a couple hours later, and when i try to turn up the sound, below the sound bar when i press the button is a little symbol, like the no smoking symbol, like the circle with a slash through it, i have no idea how it got that way or what i did. in short, it is muted, and i cant un mute it

Have you tried rebooting and/or resetting PRAM? The sound hardware probably just needs to get reset.

Yeah reset the PRAM, but also check to see how audio is being outputted in System Preferences.

I concur. You may have a System Preference that is over-riding everything. A PRAM reset might help as well.

It's doing that because the headphone jack is jammed in optical mode. Get a pair of headphones and play sex with the headphone jack for a min or so until the red light in the headphone jack goes away... that WILL fix it immediately.

Cheers

That could be it, you can also use a paperclip to poke around. This problem probably WON'T go away, and requires a logic board replacement to fix it.

You can tell if it's stuck in optical mode because it will be glowing red.

ok well I had the problem and I've seen it before. The fix worked for me and everybody else and I haven't seen it come back yet. I've never had anyone complain about needing a logic replacement.
