Hi everyone!

PowerBook G4 Ti 800Mhz DVI

Is there something like a "maximum core temperature" that the computer will shut down at? The computer hasn't shut down yet, but I wanted to find out if it can protect itself in the event that the fans stop working. The low speed fan seems to be working, but the high speed fan stops and starts all the while making this "stripped plastic gear noise." I'm not even sure if it has one fan or two fans.

This computer is old, but if I replaced the top case/palm rest, it would look like new.

Yes. There are temp sensors with hard limits. Once you reach that limit the PB will shut off immediately. This is low-level. It will shut off immediately w/o saving anything or logging off in order to protect the hardware.

Nevertheless I'd still take a loser look at it. Those fans are there for a reason. Find out what's broken, try to get a part no. and see if you can get a spare part. Doing a fan swap isn't such a big deal.

Your Ti has two fans BTW. You can buy both of them for $20 a piece here

Here are two extensive disassembly guide for your Ti

Thank you for the links Simon!

Am I correct to assume that the primary fan is the low speed fan secondary fan is the high speed fan?

I'm not sure what you mean by high/low speed.

The primary is the one in the center of the MLB. The secondary is on the side. On the 667 MHz Ti there is no secondary, there's just a placeholder bracket.
