Is the sound built into the motherboard on a 17" G4 Powerbook or is there a separate sound card. Google. Fu. failing. can't. scroll. through. any. more. pages!

All current and recent Mac notebooks (including yours) have all chips (CPU, graphics, sound, etc.) on the main logic board (except for modems on older models that had them). There is no room for separate removable cards.
