Hi folks,
My cat had a little nap on my open MacBook with OS 10.5.4, and now some weird things are happening and I'm not sure what she did to make things this way and what I need to do to get them back to as they were!
Right now my F keys either don't work, or do different things. Volume and brightness don't work. The low volume key makes my windows disappear to the sides. The high volume key makes my dashboard show. The mute button makes all background windows disappear and the background go black. No key seems to do what it says it is supposed to do, like they're all mixed up.
Also, there's a black border in some windows, such as my Mail window. My Inbox message list is outlined in a black border. I also see this black border around some aqua buttons. For example, when I click "about this mac", there is a border around "software update", but not "more info...". And in Mail it is around the red "close window" button, but not around that button in Firefox. Does anyone know how to get rid of this border or fix the mixed keys problem? I'm pretty sure neither problem was there before. Thanks!

The black border is VoiceOver. You can turn that off in the Universal Access area in System Preferences. For the rest of it, check the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and see if the setting for "invert fn key actions" or something along those lines is checked. (I can't get to my laptop right now, so I don't recall the exact name.)

Thanks very muchfor your reply. I fixed the black border.
In Keyboard and Mouse prefs, I checked the box that said "use all f1, f2, etc. keys as standard function keys." I then clicked the "keyboard shortcuts" tab and assigned the correct keys to dimmer and brighter, and this works fine. However, I can't figure out how to reset/assign F keys for volume up, down, mute, and the other functions. I figured out how to put in a new function, and name it. But I can't figure out how to actually, for example, make the lower volume button lower the volume.

You need to move the Expose functions of of the volume keys. Check your Expose and Spaces keyboard settings.

As far as I can see, nothing is assigned to F7-F12

I know this thread is old but I had basically the same thing happen to me except it was my dog that walked over my mackbook so I thought I'd post how I fixed it. The part above about turning off voiceover in Universal Access is right and all you have to do to get your F keys working again is stay in Universal Access and go from the seeing tab to the "Mouse and Trackpad" tab. Click return to defaults and everything should be fine. If you had individual settings under this tab you would have to reclick them manually, but it will only affect the Universal Access settings. Hope this helps someone .
