MacBook 2.0 Core Duo 2GB OSX 10.5.4

What started happening again today is the Airport icon on startup is on but when the mac fully boots it is off and when I try to turn Airport on nothing happens it just stays off. Ethernet works fine just airport will not turn on. I had a similar problem last month and fixed it by reinstalling everything.

I reset pram, reset smu, tried removing all Locations in network, started in Safe Boot, tried another user account, trashed system caches etc etc and nothing is working. It is out of warranty so im screwed unless someone knows how to resolve this problem.

The airport extreme card does show in System Profiler.

Thanks very much in advance.

Create a new user account and see if the problem persists under that account.

I got it working again thanks to a post in the apple forums:

1. Connect to network via Ethernet.
2. Go to Network in System Preferences.
3. Select AirPort and under the gear dropdown choose Make Service Inactive.
4. Hit the plus and add a new AirPort service (Airport 2 or whatever).
5. In the Advanced tab add the name of the wireless network you wish to join.
6. Hit Apply.
7. After a few moments, the new service found my network. I deleted the "original" Airport service and renamed the new one to Airport.

Yeah every once in a while this happens to the airport in my MacBook, ever since upgrading to leopard. Hasn't happened lately though.

hey nin9999,

i registered here just to say thanks. i had been tearing my hair out all afternoon as my MBP's airport had just decided to switch itself off and never switch on again - right at a point where i was setting up a new Wifi access point too, which i was also having trouble with!

anyway, your little fix worked perfectly - thanks for posting it. i had tried everything else i could think of including changing security settings and removing the airport preference.plst from the library, but only this worked. so simple too..

i am unsure if this had anything to do with the 10.5 update that was pulled, as i pretty much always do software updates unless i've read bad things about upcoming updates - that update was about 3-4 weeks ago now and it was only today that the problem occured, however today was the first day in many months that i had changed my airport settings or switched it on and off.

if anyone else has any more info on this, any more cases to report i would be interested to hear, as i need to be more careful about my software updates, if infact they were the cause..

cheers.

I have the same problem, but when try to create a new AirPort service, I don't have that option in my list, just FireWire, Ethernet, Bluetooth, VPN, PPPoE, and 6 to 4. I don't know if that's always been the case, because I've not needed to add a new service until now.

I successfully used my Airport connection a few days ago.

Does anyone have any ideas. I have years of computer experience, but am a recent Mac adopter, so I'm still learning MacOS stuff. Thanks for any leads.

I tried these steps

Still no luck. What other options are there?

I don't know how to solve your problem, but I can recommend some useful resources. If you purchased your mac 90 days or less from today, you can get free technical support from apple by calling 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273). If not, you can always make an apointment for a genius bar in an apple store nearby.

I experienced the same problem (Leopard 10.5.8, MacBook Core Duo).
It happened soon after running a Linksys utility for initial configuration of a WRT110 router.
Maybe just coincidence.

Same problem. OS X 10.5.8 MacBook Pro, bought in March 2009. Airport card ceases to work and won't turn back on. Macbook has also started to freeze occasionally. A reboot seems to get the Airport working again - then it may work for a couple of hours or more before giving up. Apple phone help suggested I should by rights (as it is over 90 days old) pay £35 to them for the 'advice' given on the phone about the Airport card and another £35 for the 'advice' for the freezing up. The advice given was to reset the power supply and pram and reboot. This has made no difference. But they kindly let me off the fee which of course I was not going to pay for anyway - as it's not fixed. And suggested I pay about £250 for a warranty.
If it's hardware they want me to leave it with them for a week. What will they actually be doing with it for a week?

This Solution worked for me after following those steps and restarting my computer. Thank you, Mac Gurus.
