I know that for those affiliated with higher education, there is a free iPod promotion if you buy a Mac. This applies even for the cheap MacBook.

Hasn't Apple had this every year for the past 3 years? That promotion is very enticing, but we don't really need another laptop right now, and were planning just to wait until next summer. No guarantees, but I figure if it's been the same promotion every year then they'll probably have it again next year.

Thing is, I don't remember them giving up to $299 back? Wasn't it like $199 before?

So what some students did was to sell the iPod off after getting to school (unopened packaging) which subsidized their laptop purchase...

Used to be $150ish (iPod nano), they bumped it up to the iTouch this year (presumably to push Cocoa Touch devices) and I'd expect they'll do at least something next year.

Yes, I can recall the same(ish) promotion over the last few years, and a "free printer" promo before that. But as mduell points out, they upped the ante (doubled it!) this year with the Touch. Last August, when I bought my iMac, I got the "free iPod rebate" thing so I bought my son a 30G iPod, paying regular student price for it, where the rebate paid for a Nano. And of course they discontinued the 30G video iPod, bumping the minimum hard drive to 80GB and calling the whole thing the "iPod Classic." I think there may be something like this going on in Apple's strategic planning, but I can't point to the strategy over the previous years.

Hmmm... That's true. It's a $319 rebate up here in Canada, if you buy the $319 8 GB iPod touch. That's nearly a third of the cost of the MacBook itself!

I don't need an iPod touch as I already have the iPhone, but I figure I could sell it for close to $300. BTW, Wasn't there a year where they got a new model, and then included the new model in the rebate for the same year? Probably was an iMac though. MacBooks/iBooks seem to be released in October/November (except in 2005).

P.S. I just sold my 2 year-old MacBook Core Duo. It's amazing how well they retain their value. I picked up G4 800 iBook for very cheap recently and figure it will last me until I get another MacBook. That iPod promotion might make it sooner rather than later though. I'll wait until Sept. before I decide.
