mac os 10.4
3gb ram
2.16ghz
macbook 2,1

Normally its a perfectly smooth, quiet as a mouse, kickass black macbook

unfortunately this all gets thrown out the window when I stream media.

About a quarter through watching The News, Macbook has a panic attack, making the poor fan spin at a thousand revs per second for the rest of the day (unless I reboot), for no apparent reason.

Fan heats up system, I'm not sure what temperature in kelvins, but my anecdotal evidence is that the skin on my leg is now burnt to a crisp, and I might sue apple.

That's pretty much the whole story. and it won't stop, 30 minutes after quitting the media, ditto

I would accept it if my computer was actually working hard, but it's not I have one application open, Safari, with one page, this forum.

If you can help, please do, you might just be saving steve jobb's as$ from a lawsuit

and i will give you 10 kudos points and half a euro.

Use top in a shell or Activity Monitor to find out what process it is that is causing all the CPU load. It's that load that's causing your fan to run loud. Obviously even after you stop watching, that process is still running and heating up your MB. Once you find out which process it is, kill it. Stop using that software or website. Write to the developer or page editor about why you have stopped using their product/site. Hopefully they will fix their app or/ update their page to use a better format.

P.S. You cannot sue Steve Jobs for the way you use your MB. Especially not, when you do not understand what you are actually doing. Fans run for a reason. I they wouldn't, that would actually be a reason to sue Apple.

Is "The News" using Flash for their streaming media?
Flash runs very poorly on OS X, driving CPU usage through the roof with system calls (kernel_task will appear in Activity Monitor as eating your CPU).

@missingbite - Unreal. When I read your last thread it all started to make sense to me.

On friday night I was in the pocess of printing out a very long document but I had to run out the door in a hurry so I shut my laptop and went home. I forgot about this until now... it never would have occured to me that this could hammer my Mac so badly but it bloody well did

I found the process in the Activity Monitor. I Killed it. And the fan stopped!!! Thanks missingbite for fixing my Mac!!!!
