Hi everyone...

With my MacBook (13-inch, Core 2 Duo, 10.4.11), pressing the 'W' key on an external USB keyboard has the same effect as pressing the “increase screen brightness” key on the built-in keyboard. (And it types a 'W' too.)

I've used this keyboard for many months, if not years, with no problems.

Can anyone help me?

(Lately I've observed several of these bizarre little glitches, like restarting upon closing of the display, and the omission of one letter from my name in the “You must authenticate to unlock the screen” box, which resolved itself after I restarted the computer. I thought this kind of stuff was something I left behind when I switched from Windows? )

I would test it with another keyboard and go from there to determine if its the keyboard or some setting that was changed.

I'd check the Keyboard Shortcuts setting in the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane to make sure you haven't assigned "Increase Screen Brightness" to W somehow.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I checked those... even clicked "Restore Defaults" on Keyboard Shortcuts. The problem doesn't go away.

(And typing 'W' on the built-in keyboard does not trigger the brightness control.)

Thanks for the suggestion, though...

I'll try to test the computer with some different USB keyboards.
