Dodgy + dangerous battery - will Apple refund me?

Hi all

This morning I put my MBP onto the desk and after an hour is started getting a bit hot, more so than normal. Then the machine started to get wobbly. I looked underneath and saw that something strange had happened to the battery. It was really really hot and it looked like this:



Now I'm no expert but doesn't that look just a little bit dangerous? My guess is that it's not far from either leaking battery fluid or catching fire. I need to grab a new battery quickly today but I was wondering if anyone thought I might be able to get Apple to refund my purchase? I'm about 8 months over my warranty but it strikes me as this is pretty serious and deserves some action.

Has anyone else had something like this happen?

Yes, your battery is faulty. Remove it immediately and stop using it to prevent damage to your MBP or injury.

Apple will replace it no questions asked once they see that image. You could ty to get them to reimburse you for the battery you already bought, but that might require some extra persuasion. Usually Apple sends out a new battery and you send back in the old one. An Apple store or AASP could hand out a new battery immediately in turn for the old one if they have a replacement on stock.

In the worst case you can sell off the replacement you get from Apple to recuperate what you spent on your new battery. The replacement you'll receive from Apple is a new battery so you should be able to sell it for close to what it costs.

The same thing happened to my battery (17" MBP, late '06, ~500 cycles) and Apple replaced the battery at no cost. I still had Applecare on it, though.

Just call the Apple and describe your problem to them, as soon as they hear about the bloated battery they will probably tell you to stop using the battery immediately and send you a replacement.

I called Apple and after being cut off (grrr) they agreed to send me a new battery free of charge. Apparently this one was subject to a product recall anyway. The thing that annoys me is that they knew I had one of these batteries, they have my email, telephone number and address and could easily have informed me but didn't bother. I think that's a bit naughty really.

Once I got through to AppleCare they were very quick to ask all kinds of legal questions, damage to house, person, computer etc but wouldn't have needed to worry whether I died in a blazing fire if they'd have informed me that the battery I was using was potentially dangerous.

Anyway, all sorted, thanks for the advice guys.
