I have a relatively new (couple months old) Macbook Pro. Recently, my trackpad and keyboard have stopped working. If I apply a little pressure to the trackpad while moving it, it will move for a bit before stopping again. The keyboard works when the trackpad does and vice versa. I have not spilled anything on it or dropped it so I don't know why this is happening. I am currently using a usb mouse and keyboard to work.

Also, (not sure if this is related) after installing recent software updates and being prompted to restart, the software installation gets stuck on "configuring installation" and will not budge and i've been forced to cancel and shut down every time...

Any thoughts?

Could be that the connection from your trackpad/keyboard is loose. I would take it to your nearest place that does warranty work and have them look at it.

What software updates are stalling? All of them?

Yes, I suspect the two are related. Borked system updates wreak havoc on your system and stuff that depends on it.

Boot into safe mode and download the OS X combo updater for your system. If you are using 10.5, the 10.5.5 combo updater is here.

MacBook Pros had/have an issue where the trackpad cable that runs through the battery compartment gets damaged.
Next time it happens, try taking the battery out and poking around the top of the battery compartment to see if it comes back to life.
