Hi folks,

I have been using a USB flash drive as a scratch disk for Photoshop on my 2.0 MBP for some time, it has really worked great.

But now with CS4, Snow Leopard and the new 2.8 / faster GPU, I am wondering if it would be possible to use an SSD drive in the express card slot as a scratch disk? Or would a drive in the FW800 slot be just as fast? Besides moving /non-moving parts, what is the benefit of a SSD drive over a optical and would it be an optimal scratch disk.

I run a MacPro with full tilt ram / graphics, twin Raptors, etc, so I am just trying to build on a good idea in the field since that is where a lot of time is spent.

Also, how do I find out what all is available for the MBP X-Card slot to begin with?

Thoughts?

Yes, it is possible. I don't really understand why you're asking us to compare SSDs to optical drives.
An SSD in the ExpressCard slot (assuming it's using PCIe rather than USB, both of which are available in the EC slot) is going to be dramatically faster than Firewire, particularly for latency (which is why you went with flash in the first place).

edit: Unfortunately the only EC/34 SSDs I see are so cheap it leads me to assume they're USB rather than PCIe for the data bus.
