I see in the specs that they are rated differently. Does this mean that I need to buy another MBP adapter because my spare older macbook one wouldn't / will not work with the new MBP? It'll be hard keeping track of our families spares and who plugs what where without looking at the fineprint each time... Or is the new MBP adapter a brushed aluminum to help differentiate it? Why do they do this to us?!

This was answered recently. All Magsafe adapters are compatible with all machines. The only issue arises when using a MacBook adapter with an MBP. The lower wattage of the MacBook adapter means that the MBP may not charge while running (needs to sleep or be shut down).

FWIW, a MacBook Air 45W adapter will power a regular plastic MacBook just fine. (It probably works just as well with the new aluminum ones.)

The rule is really simple.
Every MagSafe adapter will work with every MagSafe Mac.
Note 1) Using a high-power adapter on a low-power machine (i.e. MBP adapter with MB) is not dangerous.
Note 2) A high-power adapter will charge a high-power Mac faster than a low-power adapter (i.e. charging a MBP will be fastest with a MBP adapter)

A guy at the Apple store told me I'd harm a machine if I used a higher power MagSafe than what was required.
I asked him so what MacBook/Pro can I connect to the the new 24" LCD since it only has 1 MagSafe adapter output. He said the MagSafe adapter on the LCD is autosensing so you could use any MacBrick or MacBrickPro.

All chargers are forward and backward compatible. Just note that a lower power source (eg 45W) on a MacBook Pro will result in a slower / limited charge.

As I posted above, that is complete and utter baloney. The battery/Mac requests the right amount of power. It's not like the charger could "force" too much power.

Sigh.. It's ridiculous, they should only sell the one type of adapter then... One size fits all.

I believe you. There's no reason why a 85w MagSafe shouldn't be able to power any MacBook or Pro without making them explode. I'm just sayin' what the AppleStore Employee said.

The 85W adapter is heavier and bigger. Also, the MBA adapter has an L-shaped connector to fit the MBA enclosure.
Apple could sell only one, but then all the MB people would be complaining that they now need to carry around a heavier/bigger charger they don't need.

Ehh I guess we're all just complainers! Thanks Simon! Hey guys, is Apple the only one with magsafe adapters (We can only buy from them?) I see some on ebay but want to make sure they're truly 'safe'. Even apples own magsafe power adapter gets low reviews on their store. But basically, we have no choice right?

IIRC MagSafe is patented and Apple hasn't licensed it to anybody.
